Claimed by William: My Dad’s Best Friend Story

“What kind of margarita do we want to make? Should we try for specialty or just go classic?” Sarah, one of my colleagues, asks.

“What were you thinking in terms of specialty?” I respond.

“Cranberry?”

“Nah, I think that’s overdone,” I remind her.

“What about watermelon?”

“That’s a possibility. Kick off to summer kind of thing. Can we get fresh watermelon this time of year in Texas?” I ask.

“I’ll check!” she tells me.

I look out the window of the tour bus and marvel over what a whirlwind year this has been. A year ago, I was finishing up my first year of college when I entered a chili making contest at a local bar.

I won first place with my Latin inspired chili recipe a popular cooking channel recruited me (and several other 20-somethings) to star in a new reality tv show. Now we‘re headed to TX for a Cinco de Mayo festival weekend to compete in a taco cooking competition.

“Hannah, you haven’t given me your proposed schedule yet,” William, the head of our security team, tells me in his usual gruff manner.

“I’m working on it, okay? I’ve been busy with a few other things,” I tell him as I roll my eyes.

“Don’t roll your eyes at me young lady. I’m here for your protection and you need to listen. You take your safety for granted at your own peril.” he says as he turns his back and walks away.

When I think he‘s out of earshot I mock him under my breath, “You take your safety for granted at your own peril.”

When he grabs my arms and pulls me up to standing, I realize he heard me. He’s a former pro-football player, so he‘s a big guy and he holds my arms as he pulls me in close.

He crushes my breasts against his muscular torso, and I hold my breath. “Your safety is at risk and this network and your dad insist that I do everything in my power to keep you safe. You will do as I say.”
