This story can be divided into three parts, and while the first is a bit of a letdown, the second and third are a treat, and it gets better as it goes on. The first part doesn’t work for me because it’s a bit too stream-of-consciousness, too freeform, and I had to keep rereading parts to understand what was happening moment-to-moment. (This is also the second Carmen Evergreen story I’ve read in which “flesh ripping” is used to describe sex, which I simply do not understand the appeal of.) The second part showcases the mother’s selfishness and casual manipulation of her son, but in a teasing and exciting way, and gives the impression that the mother and son might have done this before. But in the third part I indulged in being in the mother’s head, and hearing all the ways in which she craved her son’s body. A rough start, but ultimately delicious.
