My eyes widen. “What does love have to do with anything?” As a royal, I’ve always known that I wouldn’t be able to marry for love. Maybe I could end up loving my husband like Mom ended up loving my stepdad, but any marriage for me would be born out of political usefulness, not some passionate love. As a royal himself, Sterling should know that.

“Goddamn it, Katherine,” Sterling says through clenched teeth, sounding angry.

Irritation flares up inside me. Why is he getting mad? It’s not like he’s the one who has to marry a 67-year-old man with bad breath. “What is up with you?”

He shouts, “You can’t fucking marry him!”

I nearly flinch, startled by the loudness of his voice. In a whisper, I ask, “Why not?”

“I love you, Katherine.”

I catch my breath. Is this a dream? “Well, of course you love me. You’re my brother, and I’m your sister.”

My pulse races when he pulls me into his arms. “You know that’s not what I fucking mean. I love you in a way that no brother should love his sister.” He caresses my cheek, the contact sending a shiver down my spine. “Thank Christ you’re my stepsister.”
