God, did I imagine that moment between us? I swear I felt a spark… No. Stop it, Grace. My brother is not actually interested in me. I’m being stupid, reading too much into things like always. I need to get over this ridiculous crush before I make a fool of myself.

Unable to bear the festivities any longer, I slip away from the party, desperate for some air that isn’t thick with the scent of Daniel’s cologne. My feet sink into the cool sand as I walk along the shoreline, leaving the sounds of celebration behind. It’s a beautiful night–stars twinkling above, waves lapping gently–but it only makes me feel more alone.

I spot a large rock jutting out from the sand, and I wander over to it. Leaning my back against its smooth surface, I stare out at the water, letting the rhythmic sounds of the ocean soothe me. The breeze plays with my hair, and I close my eyes, trying to clear all thoughts of Daniel’s hands, his lips, the way he looked at me…

“You shouldn’t be out here alone.”

My heart leaps into my throat at the sound of Daniel’s deep voice. He’s standing a few feet away, hands in his pockets, looking illegally handsome in the moonlight. My mouth goes dry at the sight of him, and I have to wet my mouth before I can speak.

“I… I just needed some air.” I sound breathier than I intended, and I silently curse myself. He’s going to be able to tell how attracted I am to him if I keep acting this way.

My pulse races as my brother moves towards me, each step sending a bolt of electricity through me. “Everything okay?” he asks, his brow furrowed in concern.

I nod, not trusting myself to speak. He’s so close now, I can see the stubble on his jaw. God, I want to reach out and touch him so badly my fingers twitch with the need.

“Grace,” he says softly, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. The gesture makes a warmth bloom in my chest, and I almost sway towards him as he continues. “About earlier…”

Oh god, don’t make me think about my embarrassment. I blurt out, “It’s fine. I get it. You got caught up in the moment. It didn’t mean anything.”

Daniel’s eyes sharpen. “No, it can’t mean anything. I can’t kiss my little sister. It’s wrong.”

His words hit me like a punch to the gut, and suddenly I’m annoyed at him for making me feel this way–and angry at myself for being so naïve. I toss my hair over my shoulder, lifting my chin defiantly. “Is it wrong? We’re both adults. We can choose what we do with our lives.”

“You don’t know what you’re asking for,” his tone is harsh, and I get a burst of joy from knowing he’s reacting to me. That I’m affecting him as much as he’s affecting me.

I summon every ounce of courage I possess. “Try me.”

He stares at me for two heartbeats–I count them, feeling each one thud in my chest–and then he presses me against the rock. There’s barely any space between us now, and every nerve ending is on high alert.

“Grace, here’s your chance to leave before we get in too deep.”

Every part of me wants to lose myself in him completely. I want to whisper, but I have to raise my voice to be heard over the waves. “Shut up and kiss me.”

Surprise flickers across his face and then he captures my lips with his own. Oh god, I’ve fantasized about kissing my brother since my 18th birthday, but the real thing is so much better than I could have ever imagined. His stubble tickles my chin as he deepens the kiss. A small moan escapes me as I open up to him, letting him explore my mouth. I move my hands up to clutch his shirt, pulling him closer, not wanting this moment to end.

As our tongues dance together, a part of me still can’t believe that this is happening. I’m actually making out with my brother. Our parents would freak out if they knew what we were doing. We can’t let anyone know about this. It’ll be our little secret. Just one crazy kiss in the moonlight.
