The Memory of You

Heidi set the spatula down and hesitantly broached her plan. “I think I need to find him again.”

“How?” her twin asked. “You don’t know anything about this guy, not even a name.”

“True,” Heidi conceded. “But of all the librarians, I’m the best at finding the most obscure books, the answers to the seemingly impossible questions. When the other librarians are stumped by something, they always bring it to me. I’m nothing if not tenacious.”

“You are that. What’s the plan?”

“I’m going back to the beginning. The start of it all. Is this crazy? You can tell me. Honest opinion.”

Melody scoffed at the suggestion. “No. You felt something, karma, kismet, an interpersonal connection, but because neither of you spoke up, it’s unresolved.”

“Unresolved, yes, that’s exactly how this feels,” Heidi agreed distantly and took a pinch of cookie dough from the bowl as Melody loaded up the cookie press. “As if I let the best thing in my life walk away. I hate this feeling.”
